1491 BC—The Ten Commandments

After leaving Egypt and heading to the Promised Land, God led the nation of Israel to the foot of Mount Sinai, a place you can go to today, and called Moses up the mountain:

The Lord descended to the top of Mount Sinai and called Moses to the top of the mountain. (Exodus 19:20)

There on Mount Sinai, God etched in stone tablets the Ten Commandments for Moses and his people. The Ten Commandments were put in the ark of the covenant, and then placed in the innermost part of their worship tent, the holy of holies. When the temple was built in Jerusalem by Solomon, the ark of the covenant and the Ten Commandments were put inside the holy of holies portion of the temple. In 587 BC when the Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem, there is no definitive record of what became of the ark. However, in Revelation 11:19 the Bible indicates the ark will be in heaven.

The Old Testament law, or the Mosaic Law, as it is often referred to, was given to the Jews by God through Moses following this series of events at Mount Sinai. The Mosaic Law consisted of the Ten Commandments, hundreds of ordinances or specific laws, and the worship system. The purpose of the law was primarily to reveal God’s holy character and his will to the people, as well as to reveal the sinfulness of people.
